Holy Cow Chardonnay - I got a soft spot, dang it!

"Holy Cow, is this bad. But a good back up for fondue-making if you would rather spend $12 to boil your wine and put cheese in it."

That was going to be my first review... until I decided to check out their website: www.charlessmithwines.com, and develop a conscious. Dang it! Remind me not to do that. They are from Walla Walla Washington, and have really cute pictures and pretty convincing commentary about their wines.

Furthermore, I'm not a white drinker. So, who am I to judge. After checking out their other wines, I got excited to try some of their reds - notably the syrah. However, all I have here left to taste from them is Kung Fu Girl, which is a Riesling. Why I bought it is another story, for another post.

Holy Cow Chardonnay 2006 (I would bash it, but I'm not going to)

Mattawa
Washington

P.S. I think it's funny how they felt the need to say "Washington State" ... I really never heard anyone say that until I went to the east coast, when there was a need to differentiate it from Washington, as in D.C. This is probably because the Charles Smith is from Scandinavia, and not from the west coast, where we assume Washington is a "state".

Ha! Interesting reasoning behind changing your review. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I understand the draw of Charles Smith and his wines. I'm such a sucker for labels : )

Here's a little info:
The winery is in Walla Walla, WA.
Charles Smith, quite the character, is originally from California, but spent just over a decade in Scandanavia where he was involved in the music industry.
The wines being labeled as Washington State indicates that fruit was sourced not from a specific AVA, but that all comes from within Washington. Others are marked Columbia Valley (AVA) or Walla Walla Valley (AVA) accordingly.

Which wines have you tried? And what do you think of the reds? Have they all been Charles Smith or have you had K Vintners as well? What about Magnificent Wine Company's House Wine?

First of all... Amy is reading my blog... I feel so special.

Second, I totally bought this Holy Cow wine because of the label, and the "other" Kevin at Sendik's said a lot of people buy it. That might be because it was on display at the endcap. Again - sucker for marketing techniques! You'd think I'd not fall for this stuff... but you know us - if it's at the checkout lane with pretty packaging we're bound to buy it.

So, this is the only Charles Smith wine I've tried. I bought Kung Fu Girl (Riesling) but I am waiting for someone to show up that likes Riesling to try it.

I changed my wording regarding their commentary on their wines... it's less "friendly" and more "convincing". Plus they didn't have any commentary saying that Holy Cow wine was good, which was reassuring. The way they described their reds made me feel like I would really like them for their reds. So, NO, I haven't tried any of the other Charles Smith wines or K Vintners.

And what about Magnificent Wine Company's House Wine... have you had it & like?

So, if Charles Smith is originally from California, why is he referring to Washington as Washington state? It seems so un-Californian. Unless he's from Northern California... I don't understand those ones at all.

But that's exactly it. He is from N. CA. Check this out. http://www.magnificentwine.com/winemaker.php

I think you might like they Holy Cow Merlot, but perhaps more likely, the Magnificent Wine Co (still Charles Smith, you see) House Wine (Red).

If you're feeling like spending a bit more, I love K Vintners Syrahs. Killer! Really. The "Cougar Hills" is sold out, but you can still find a few bottles here: http://tinyurl.com/5t6rrq
